Button Cookies
Ingredients: White: 225 g flour, 75 g powdered sugar (I used granulated), 150 g butter/margarine, 1 egg yolk, grated orange peel. Brown: 200 g flour, 25 g bitter cocoa, 75 g sugar, 150 g butter/margarine, 1 egg yolk, flavors.
To create a delicious and flavorful dessert, I started with a white dough that I divided into two equal parts. In one half, I added a generous tablespoon of ground hazelnuts, but feel free to experiment with ground nuts or dried coconut, depending on your preferences. This additional ingredient will give a distinctive taste and an interesting texture to each cookie. After incorporating the hazelnuts into the dough, I began to form small balls which I carefully placed on plastic wrap. Then, I put these balls in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes, during which the dough slightly hardened, making it easier to roll out.
When it was time to work with the dough, I took out one ball, rolled it into a thin sheet, and cut out the desired shapes using shot glasses, bottle caps, or even a thimble that I exclusively use in the kitchen. The inner circle of each cookie should not be completely cut out; rather, it is pressed lightly to give it shape. Additionally, to create decorative holes, I used a toothpick, adding an attractive detail.
Imagination is key, so feel free to cut out various shapes, such as squares or diamonds, thus creating a diverse platter. From one batch of dough, approximately 25 trays are produced, each containing between 5 and 6 cookies, meaning you will end up with over 130 delicious pieces. These are baked on parchment paper in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 10 minutes. Be careful, as they can burn quickly! Once ready, the cookies are best stored in metal tins or glass jars, thus maintaining their freshness.
If you want to add a splash of color, you can use food coloring. This will turn the cookies into true works of art, perfect for any occasion. Experiment with different flavors and textures, and enjoy the satisfaction of creating a dessert that will surely be appreciated by everyone who tastes it!
