Jambalaya: A Symphony of Flavors from America
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 45 minutes
Total time: 1 hour

Jambalaya is an iconic culinary dish from the southern United States, blending influences from African American and Spanish cultures. This dish is a true symphony of flavors, full of rich and varied ingredients that can be adapted to your preferences. Essentially, jambalaya is similar to the famous paella, but it has its own unique characteristics. In the following lines, I will guide you step by step in preparing this delicious dish.
Ingredients:
- 300 g long-grain rice (preferably basmati or jasmine)
- 400 g chicken breast, diced
- 200 g chorizo sausage, sliced (or pork sausage)
- 200 g shrimp, peeled (optional)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 1 red bell pepper, diced
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 400 g canned tomatoes (or fresh chopped tomatoes)
- 750 ml chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sweet paprika
- 1 teaspoon Herbs de Provence (or a combination of oregano and thyme)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley leaves for garnish
Preparation method:
1. Start by preparing all the ingredients. Dice the chicken and sausage, and finely chop the vegetables. It is important to have all the ingredients at hand to ensure that the preparation goes quickly and efficiently.
2. In a large pot or deep skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the onion and bell pepper, sautéing for 3-4 minutes or until they become soft and translucent. Add the garlic one minute before removing the vegetables from the heat to release its aroma.
3. Add the diced chicken breast and sausage. Cook everything for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and the sausage starts to brown.
4. Incorporate the canned tomatoes, sweet paprika, Herbs de Provence, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients well to combine the flavors. Let it simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the tomatoes to reduce slightly.
5. Add the rinsed rice and mix it with the other ingredients. Pour the hot chicken broth over the mixture and bring everything to a boil. Once it starts boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes. It is important not to lift the lid during cooking, as the steam helps cook the rice.
6. After the cooking time has elapsed, add the shrimp (if you choose to use them) and let it cook for another 5 minutes until they turn opaque.
7. Once cooking is done, remove the pot from the heat and let the jambalaya sit covered for 5 minutes. This step will allow the flavors to meld and the rice to become fluffier.
8. Serve the jambalaya hot, garnished with fresh parsley leaves. You can also add a few lemon slices for an extra touch of freshness.
Practical tips:
- You can adapt the ingredients according to your preferences. For example, you can use fish, beef, or vegetables for a vegetarian version of jambalaya.
- Make sure the rice is well rinsed before adding it to the dish to avoid sticking.
- If you like your food spicier, add a little Tabasco sauce or chopped chili pepper to the mix.
Jambalaya is not just a simple recipe, but also a true invitation to explore the flavors of the southern United States. Whether it’s a family dinner or a party with friends, this dish will surely impress. Enjoy every bite and savor the culinary journey it offers!
1. Sauté the mushrooms in olive oil or vegetable oil and then set them aside. 2. The chopped onion and sausage (or ham or bacon) are sautéed together until the onion becomes translucent and the sausage releases fat. Add the chopped peppers and celery and continue sautéing. 3. After about 5 minutes, add the tomatoes and chicken (in my case, the chicken breast was already grilled) and garlic. 4. Add the mushrooms and a bit of tomato sauce, rice, chicken broth (or water), shrimp, and bay leaves. The shrimp should be added with the rice or a little before, as they cook quite quickly and if left too long, they become tough. Let everything simmer on low heat until the liquid reduces and the rice is cooked. If you've added too much water, place the pot in the oven until it reduces. The dish should not be too watery. 5. Near the end, add the chopped green onion and parsley or your favorite herbs. Enjoy your meal! The Jambalaya recipe was suggested by aLAndala on the recipe forum.
Ingredients: Shrimp, Rice (instant in my case, which requires less water or broth). Long grain rice is recommended, but if you use regular rice, remember to adjust the amount of broth needed. I used one and a half cups of rice and one and a half cups of broth. Chicken broth or whichever you have, or water, depending on the amount of rice. Olive oil or vegetable oil, 2-3-4 celery stalks, 2 green onions, Herbs (of your choice), 4 tomatoes, 3-4-5 bay leaves, cayenne pepper, salt, oregano, red or green bell pepper, 1 hot pepper, 1 onion, diced chicken breast or another type of meat, 1 piece of smoked sausage (spicy in my case), 5-6 cloves of garlic, tomato sauce, mushrooms. There are many ingredients, but everyone adapts.
