Moussaka with meat and mushrooms
We start with the preparation of this delicious moussaka, a dish that brings together rich flavors and pleasant textures. The first step is to take care of the fresh vegetables. Chop the onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms finely, making sure to uniform them for even cooking. Put a pan on the heat and add the oil, letting it heat up well. When the oil is hot, add the chopped vegetables and sauté them over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onion becomes translucent and the flavors blend together.
After the vegetables have softened, add 400 grams of minced meat, mixing well to combine. Season the mixture with salt and pepper to taste, then add enough water to cover the ingredients. Cover the pan with a lid and let everything simmer on low heat, so the meat cooks evenly and absorbs the flavors of the vegetables. While the meat mixture is simmering, let's take care of the potatoes.
Peel the potatoes and cut them into cubes, then boil them in lightly salted water. Let them boil until soft, then mash them using a potato masher or a food processor to achieve a smooth puree. Add to the puree 100 grams of grated cheese, two beaten eggs with a pinch of salt, and two tablespoons of butter, mixing well until the ingredients are fully integrated.
Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Take a baking dish and grease it with butter, then line it with breadcrumbs to prevent sticking. Now, take half of the potato puree and spread it evenly on the bottom of the prepared dish. On top, place the meat and mushroom filling, distributed evenly, then cover with the remaining potato puree. Place the dish in the oven for about 10 minutes, so the puree gets lightly browned.
During the time the moussaka is in the oven, prepare the mixture for the sauce on top. In a bowl, beat an egg with 50 ml of broth, add 50 grams of grated cheese, two tablespoons of sour cream, and a pinch of salt. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
Remove the dish from the oven and pour the broth, sour cream, cheese, and egg mixture over the moussaka. Place the dish back in the oven and let it bake on low heat for about 20 minutes, until a golden crust forms on top. Finally, take the moussaka out of the oven and sprinkle the remaining grated cheese on top. Serve the moussaka warm, accompanied by a spoonful of sour cream for added flavor. This moussaka is not only nourishing but also an explosion of colors and flavors, perfect for a family meal or with friends.
