Preparation time: 30 minutes
Baking time: 30 minutes
Total time: 1 hour
Number of servings: 24
Ingredients:
For baklava:
- 2 packages of phyllo dough (28 sheets)
- 230 g butter
- 300 g walnut meat
- 2 tablespoons cinnamon
- A pinch of nutmeg
- 50 g sugar
For syrup:
- 300 ml water
- 300 g sugar
- 5 tablespoons honey
- 1/2 lemon (juice)
Preparation:
1. Preparing the syrup: Start by preparing the syrup, as it needs to cool. In a saucepan, combine 300 ml of water with 300 g of sugar. Put the mixture over medium heat and let it boil for 20 minutes until it becomes syrupy. Add the juice of half a lemon and let it boil for another 5 minutes. Turn off the heat, and once the syrup has cooled, incorporate the honey. Mix well and set aside.
2. Preparing the filling: Preheat the oven to 180°C. If you want a more intense flavor, you can roast the walnut meat for 5-10 minutes in the oven. Then, finely chop the walnuts and mix them with the cinnamon, nutmeg, and 50 g of sugar. This is the aromatic filling that will bring your baklava to life!
3. Assembling the baklava: Melt the butter and grease a deep baking tray with a little butter. Take the first package of phyllo dough and start layering the sheets in the tray, brushing each sheet with melted butter.
- Place 10 sheets at the base (a secret to a successful baklava is to have a solid base).
- Sprinkle a layer of walnut filling (about a quarter of the prepared mixture).
- Continue with 6 buttered sheets, followed by another layer of filling.
- Repeat this process 3 times, finishing with 4 buttered sheets, making sure to apply extra butter on the last sheet.
4. Cooling and cutting: Place the baklava in the refrigerator for 40 minutes to firm up. Then, take it out and cut it into squares or diamonds, as preferred. Pour the remaining melted butter over the cut edges to prevent the sheets from drying out while baking.
5. Baking: Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake the baklava for 30 minutes until it becomes golden and crispy.
6. Finishing: Once the baklava is ready, pour the cooled syrup over it while it is still hot. Cover with a clean, slightly damp towel and let the baklava absorb the syrup until it cools completely; ideally, leave it overnight in the refrigerator.
Serving:
Turkish baklava is served cold, sprinkled with crushed pistachios for added flavor and texture. This dessert is perfect to enjoy alongside a cup of aromatic tea or coffee.
Practical Tips:
- You can experiment with various fillings, using almonds or pistachios instead of walnuts.
- If you prefer a less sweet baklava, you can reduce the amount of sugar in the syrup.
- To add a hint of vanilla, you can add a few drops of vanilla essence to the syrup.
