Alex's Meatballs: A Delicious Treat for the Whole Family
When it comes to cooking for loved ones, there’s nothing more rewarding than creating dishes that bring smiles to their faces. Alex's meatballs are an excellent choice, not only for their delicious taste but also for being healthy and easy to prepare. This recipe is inspired by my cherished memories spent with my nephew, Alex, and represents a perfect example of food that combines nutrition with culinary pleasure.
Total preparation time: 1 hour
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes
Number of servings: 4
Necessary ingredients:
For the meatballs:
- 1/2 boneless chicken breast (approximately 250 g)
- 1 egg
- 1 small carrot
- 1/2 onion
- 2-3 tablespoons finely chopped parsley
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For the cheese sauce:
- 1 cup milk (approximately 250 ml)
- 100 g grated cheese
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1 teaspoon butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin (optional)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation:
1. Preparing the ingredients: Start by chopping the chicken breast. You can use a food processor to save time or, if you prefer, chop it finely with a knife. Make sure there are no large pieces for a uniform consistency of the meatballs.
2. Grating: Peel the carrot and onion, then grate them using a fine grater. This will help them integrate better into the mixture, providing a pleasant texture to the meatballs.
3. Mixing: In a large bowl, combine the chopped chicken breast, grated carrot and onion, beaten egg, chopped parsley, salt, and pepper. Use a spatula or your hands to mix the ingredients well until they are homogeneous.
4. Chilling: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the mixture chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. This step is essential for the meatballs to hold together during cooking.
5. Shaping the meatballs: After the mixture has chilled, take it out of the refrigerator and shape the meatballs to your desired size. You can make them smaller for kids or larger for an appetizer.
6. Boiling: In a large pot, bring water to a boil, add a little salt, then add the formed meatballs. Let them boil for about 10 minutes, gently turning them on both sides to cook evenly.
7. Preparing the cheese sauce: In a pan, melt the butter, then add the flour and quickly stir to avoid lumps. Continue by gradually adding the milk, stirring constantly. Then, add the grated cheese and ground cumin. Let the sauce simmer on low heat, stirring continuously, until it thickens. Taste and season with salt and pepper, as desired.
8. Serving: Once the meatballs are boiled, remove them with a slotted spoon and place them on a platter. Serve them with warm cheese sauce, alongside creamy mashed potatoes or a fragrant pilaf. You can also add some toasted bread croutons for extra texture.
Practical tips:
- Variations: You can experiment with different ingredients added to the mixture, such as grated zucchini or dill, to give a personal touch to the recipe.
- Storage: Leftover meatballs can be kept in the refrigerator for 2-3 days, and the cheese sauce can be freshly made as needed.
- Nutrition: This recipe is rich in protein due to the chicken breast and egg, while the carrot adds vitamins and fiber. Additionally, the cheese sauce provides essential calcium for a balanced diet.
