In a larger bowl, start by sifting the flour, an essential step that will help achieve a fine and airy texture. Add the sugar, salt, and yeast, mixing the dry ingredients well to combine them evenly. These elements are fundamental for the taste and final texture of the product. After mixing the dry ingredients, add the lukewarm milk, oil, and beaten egg. The milk helps activate the yeast, while the oil adds moisture and flavor.

Knead the dough with your hands, using a vigorous motion, until it becomes elastic and easily pulls away from the sides of the bowl and your palms. This process may take between 10 and 15 minutes, but don't rush; well-kneaded dough will result in a fluffier final product. Once you have finished kneading, cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rise in a warm place, away from drafts, for about 60 minutes. The dough should double in volume, indicating that the yeast has done its job.

After the dough has risen, knead it briefly again on a lightly floured work surface. Then, roll it out into a rectangular sheet about 0.5 cm thick. Now is the perfect time to add a splash of flavor! Evenly sprinkle the poppy seeds over the entire surface of the dough, and if desired, you can also add grated orange zest or raisins for extra flavor. Drizzle everything with melted butter, slightly warm, which will help blend the ingredients and enhance the taste.

Roll the dough lengthwise from both sides towards the center, forming two rolls. Use a sharp knife to cut the rolls into pieces 2.5 - 5 cm long and let each piece breathe by inserting the tip of a teaspoon inside to widen them. Place these pieces on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, making sure to leave a little space between them as they will rise further. Brushing with a mixture of egg yolk and a tablespoon of lukewarm milk will give a golden and appetizing crust.

Let them rise again in a warm place for about 15 - 20 minutes until they become fluffy. Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Once they have risen, place the tray in the oven and bake for 20 - 25 minutes, or until they are golden and baked through. Once ready, remove them to a wire rack and let them cool, making sure not to cover them to keep the crust crispy.

For an elegant finishing touch, you can dust the rolls with powdered sugar or glaze them. For the glaze, mix powdered sugar with lukewarm water, adding gradually until you achieve a fluid consistency, but not too runny. Use a spatula or spoon to apply the glaze over the rolls, ensuring they are evenly coated. Let the glaze dry and set, and then enjoy these delicious rolls that are sure to bring a smile to anyone who tastes them!
