Cheese flan is a Spanish recipe that brings a decadent and creamy taste, combining the tradition of flan with the richness of cheese. This simple recipe will delight your taste buds and is perfect for any occasion, from an elegant dinner to a casual gathering with friends. Let’s explore the steps to create this quick, flavorful dessert together!
Ingredients:
For the flan:
- 200 g of cream cheese
- 400 ml of condensed milk
- 200 ml of heavy cream
- 4 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- A pinch of salt
For the caramel:
- 150 g of sugar
- 50 ml of water
Instructions:
1. Prepare the caramel: In a small pan, add the sugar and water. Place the pan over medium heat and let it boil, stirring gently until the sugar completely dissolves. Do not stir too much, as you want to avoid crystal formation. Let it boil until the mixture turns a dark golden color, about 5-7 minutes. Quickly pour the caramel into the flan molds (or in one dish) and tilt them to evenly cover the bottom. This will become the delicious base of the dessert.
2. Prepare the flan mixture: In a large bowl, combine the cream cheese, condensed milk, heavy cream, eggs, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Use an electric mixer to beat the ingredients together until the mixture is very smooth and creamy. Ensure there are no lumps of cheese so that the flan has a perfectly fine texture.
3. Pour the mixture into the molds: Once the caramel has hardened, pour the flan mixture over the caramel in the prepared molds. Fill them to about ¾ full, leaving room for expansion.
4. Bake the flan: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the flan molds in a deep baking dish and fill the dish with hot water halfway up the sides of the molds (this is called a water bath). Bake the flan for 50 minutes or until it is firm to the touch. A toothpick test can help; it should come out clean if the flan is ready.
5. Cooling and serving: Let the flan cool to room temperature, then cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. When you’re ready to serve, carefully invert the flan onto a flat plate. The caramel will melt slightly, creating a delicious sauce.
Practical Tips:
- Use quality cheese, preferably Philadelphia cream cheese, for a more intense flavor.
- You can add a splash of orange liqueur or amaretto to the flan mixture for an extra layer of flavor.
- If you want a contrast of textures, add some toasted nuts or sliced almonds on top when serving.
Variations:
- Experiment with other flavors, such as cocoa or coffee, by adding a tablespoon of cocoa powder or espresso to the flan mixture.
- You can replace the cream cheese with a combination of mascarpone and ricotta for a different texture.
Cheese flan is a dessert that brings together tradition and innovation, adding a touch of Spain to every spoonful. Enjoy it simply or pair it with a fresh fruit sauce for a contrast of flavors. Whichever choice you make, this flan will surely be the star of the evening!
A very easy and delicious dessert to make. It can be made in different individual shapes or not, in the oven, on the stove, or in the microwave. All the ingredients are mixed until it becomes a homogeneous composition. Separately, prepare the caramel from 6-7 tablespoons of sugar which are placed in a small pot and covered with water. Place it on the stove and when it starts to change color, remove it from the heat and pour it into molds to cover the bottom of the molds or the tray, depending on where it is made. Pour the prepared composition over the caramel and place it in a pot (I used a pressure cooker). Add water to the pot up to three-quarters of the height of the molds, being careful not to let it enter the flan. Place it on low heat, and when it starts to boil, let it cook for 5 minutes in the pressure cooker or 8 minutes in a regular pot with a lid. In the microwave, about 3 minutes. If preparing the cream in the oven, place the individual molds in a tray, adding water to cover 2/3 of the molds. Leave in the oven until firm and pulling away from the edges.
