Apple Compote
Ingredients: Apples lemon peel (or essence) whole cinnamon stick sugar to taste
To prepare a delicious apple compote, we start by carefully peeling the apples. It is important to choose fresh apples, preferably from sweet-sour varieties, which provide a balanced taste. After washing them well under cold water, we remove the skin and cores, then cut them into quarters or sixths, depending on the size of the fruits. The cut apples are placed in a large pot, to which we add enough water to completely cover them.
Put the pot over medium heat and, as the water begins to boil, add the sugar. The amount of sugar can vary depending on personal preferences and how sweet the apples are. It is preferable to start with a smaller amount, gradually adding more while tasting the compote until you reach the desired level of sweetness. Let the apples simmer on low heat, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pot.
After about 15-20 minutes, check if the apples are cooked. A fork should easily pierce them, indicating they have reached the desired consistency. At this point, add the lemon peel and a piece of cinnamon, which will infuse the compote with subtle aromas, enriching the flavor. Let the compote simmer for another 5-10 minutes, then remove the lemon peel and cinnamon.
Now, the compote is ready! Once taken off the heat, let it cool to room temperature, then transfer it to jars or a large bowl. The apple compote can be served either cold or warm, depending on preferences. It is delicious when consumed plain but can also be accompanied by some ladyfingers for an elegant dessert. Additionally, it can be used as a filling for cakes or as a topping for yogurts and cereals. Enjoy this simple yet flavorful dish that will bring a touch of warmth and comfort to any day.
