Egg Custard with Onion and Cheese
Ingredients: -6 slices of sliced bread -4 boiled eggs -2 large onions -4 slices of sliced melted cheese -3 tablespoons of olive oil or sunflower oil -3 tablespoons of grated Grana Padano, Parmigiano, or similar cheese - parsley
To prepare this delicious recipe, we start by finely chopping the onion. This will add a special flavor to our dish. In a pan, we heat 3 tablespoons of oil over medium heat and add the chopped onion. We stir constantly so that it doesn't burn, and the oil helps it to sauté evenly. After a few minutes, when the onion becomes transparent and starts to soften, we add a little vegetable broth or water, depending on your preferences. We continue to cook the onion on low heat, stirring occasionally, until it becomes soft and sweet. Finally, we don't forget to salt and pepper to taste.
Meanwhile, we take care of the slices of bread. We soak them well in milk, making sure they absorb enough liquid to become soft, but not so much that they fall apart. We prepare a baking dish, greasing it with oil or butter to prevent sticking. I chose a dish measuring 20/15 cm, perfect for this recipe. We arrange the slices of bread in the dish, evenly covering the bottom.
The next step is to add the two eggs, sliced with the help of an egg slicer, which will help us obtain uniform and attractive slices. The first layer of eggs is placed over the bread, followed by half of the sautéed onion. Then, we add the sliced melted cheese, which will bring extra creaminess and flavor. We continue with another layer of bread, and on top we place the remaining sliced eggs and the rest of the onion.
For an extra taste and aroma, we sprinkle grated Parmigiano on top, which will melt beautifully during baking, creating a delicious crust. We drizzle everything with a little oil, to enhance the flavor and help brown the dish. Finally, we don't forget to add freshly chopped parsley, which will provide not only a touch of freshness but also a pleasing visual aspect.
We place the dish in the preheated oven at the right temperature and bake for about 25 minutes. It is important to watch the browning process so that the dish develops a golden and appetizing crust. Once we see that it has browned nicely on top, we take the dish out of the oven and let it cool slightly before slicing. This combination of ingredients will provide a comforting dish, perfect for serving at both lunch and dinner, alongside a fresh salad. Enjoy your meal!
