Delicious Spring Rolls - A Recipe Full of Flavor and Creativity

Who doesn't love a crispy appetizer, packed with flavors and textures, that brings to mind shared meals with friends? Spring rolls are a wonderful choice for any occasion, whether it's a casual dinner or a party. This recipe is my personal version, inspired by famous Chinese spring rolls, but with ingredients I have on hand in the kitchen. I invite you to discover how to prepare them step by step!

Preparation Time: 30 minutes
Baking Time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Number of Servings: 4 (approximately 16 rolls)

Ingredients

For the filling:
- 1 medium carrot, grated
- 1 medium bell pepper, sliced
- a few cabbage (or lettuce) leaves, chopped
- 1 can of bean sprouts
- a handful of rice (can be leftover rice from lunch, ideally cooked)
- 1 tablespoon oyster sauce (optional, but recommended for extra flavor)
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- a few drops of hot sauce (to taste)
- 3 tablespoons corn oil

For wrapping:
- 16 rice papers (if you don't have rice papers, you can use pastry sheets)

For frying:
- at least 300 ml oil (I used palm oil, but you can opt for sunflower or corn oil)

For the sauce:
- 4 large garlic cloves, grated or finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 4 tablespoons red wine
- 3 drops hot sauce

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Preparing the filling:
Start by heating 3 tablespoons of corn oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add the grated carrot, sliced bell pepper, cabbage (or lettuce), and bean sprouts. Sauté the mixture for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly, until the vegetables soften slightly.

2. Adding rice and spices:
Once the vegetables are ready, add the cooked rice, oyster sauce (if you choose to use it), soy sauce, and hot sauce. Mix well to combine all ingredients. After the mixture is homogeneous, let it cool.

3. Wrapping the rolls:
Soak the rice papers in warm water according to the package instructions until they become flexible. Place a sheet on a flat surface, put a tablespoon of the vegetable mixture in the middle, and fold the edges to form a roll. Make sure to place them on a plate, ensuring they don't touch, as they may stick together.

4. Frying the rolls:
In a deep pan or pot, heat the palm oil. When it is hot enough (test by dropping a drop of water; if bubbles appear, it's ready), fry the rolls one or two at a time to avoid sticking. Fry until golden and crispy, then remove them onto a paper towel to absorb excess oil.

5. Preparing the sauce:
In a small bowl, mix the garlic, soy sauce, red wine, and hot sauce. This sauce will perfectly complement your rolls, adding an extra burst of flavor.

6. Serving:
Serve the rolls hot, drizzled with the prepared sauce. You can also add a few slices of hot pepper or fresh cilantro for a more appealing look.

Practical Tips

- Choosing ingredients: Use the vegetables you have on hand. You can experiment with mushrooms, zucchini, or green onions.
- Maintaining the oil: Ensure the oil is well heated before adding the rolls for even and crispy frying.
- Vegetarian option: You can omit the oyster sauce for a completely vegetarian recipe.
- Associated recipes: These rolls pair excellently with a fresh salad or rice pilaf. You can accompany the meal with iced green tea or homemade lemonade.

Calories and Nutritional Benefits

Each roll contains approximately 100-150 calories, depending on the ingredients used and the amount of oil absorbed. These rolls are a good source of fiber, vitamins, and protein (due to the vegetables and bean sprouts), making them a healthy option for appetizers or snacks.

Frequently Asked Questions

- Can I freeze the rolls? Yes, you can freeze the un-fried rolls. Make sure to divide them into portions and store them in an airtight container. Thaw them before frying.
- What sauces can I use instead of soy sauce? Teriyaki sauce or fish sauce can be interesting alternatives.
- How can I make the rolls spicier? Add more drops of hot sauce to the filling or serve the rolls with a spicy sauce.

Spring rolls are a versatile and delicious dish that can be customized according to your preferences. Don't hesitate to experiment and put your personal touch on this recipe! I hope you enjoy every bite and share them with your loved ones. Enjoy your meal!
