Simple Homemade Bread

Making a simple homemade bread is a true art, but at the same time, it is one of the most enjoyable activities in the kitchen. The aromas that spread throughout the house while the bread bakes are simply irresistible. So, get ready to indulge your senses with a delicious bread recipe that will bring a fresh product to your table, made with your own hands.

Total preparation time: 1 hour and 20 minutes
Baking time: 45-50 minutes
Number of servings: 8

Ingredients

- 1 kg of wheat flour (choose a high-quality flour for better texture)
- 25 g of fresh yeast (this is the key to fluffy bread)
- 600 ml of lukewarm water (not hot, to avoid killing the yeast)
- 1 teaspoon of sugar (helps activate the yeast)
- 1 tablespoon of salt (to enhance the flavor)
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil or vegetable oil (adds extra flavor and texture)

Preparation

1. Activating the yeast: Start by placing the fresh yeast in a small glass. Add a teaspoon of sugar and 100 ml of lukewarm water. Stir gently and let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes until it becomes frothy. This step is essential as it ensures that the yeast is active and ready to ferment the dough.

2. Mixing the ingredients: In a large bowl, add the flour and salt. Make a well in the center of the flour and pour in the activated yeast mixture. Add the remaining lukewarm water and the oil. Use a spatula or a wooden spoon to incorporate the ingredients, mixing well until the dough becomes homogeneous.

3. Kneading the dough: Transfer the dough to a clean surface and start kneading with your hands. Kneading is an important process that will develop the gluten in the flour, giving the bread a fluffy and airy texture. Continue kneading for about 10 minutes until the dough becomes elastic and smooth. A useful tip is to oil your hands slightly to prevent the dough from sticking.

4. First rise: Place the dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place, away from drafts, for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size. If you have an oven with a fermentation function, this is the perfect time to use it.

5. Shaping the bread: Once the dough has risen, transfer it back to the work surface. Divide the dough into four equal pieces. Shape each piece into rolls, then braid two rolls together to create a beautiful shape. Place them in oiled bread pans.

6. Second rise: Cover the pans with a clean towel and let them rise again for 20 minutes. This step ensures an airy texture of the bread and gives it a nice shape when baked.

7. Baking: While the dough is rising, preheat the oven to 220°C (fan) or 240°C (without fan). When the dough has risen, place the pans in the oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the bread is golden and sounds hollow when tapped lightly on the bottom.

8. Cooling the bread: Once the bread is baked, remove it from the pans and place it on a wire rack. Cover the bread with a clean towel to keep the crust soft and prevent it from drying out. Let it cool completely before slicing.

Practical tips

- Choose quality ingredients: Flour, yeast, and oil are essential for the final taste of the bread. Choose flour that contains gluten for a good texture.
- Check the water temperature: Water that is too hot can kill the yeast, while water that is too cold will not activate it. Ideally, it should be lukewarm, similar to body temperature.
- Experiment with flavors: You can add dried herbs, garlic, or seeds to the dough for a special flavor.
- Fresh bread: Homemade bread is best consumed on the day it is baked, but it can be stored in an airtight container for 2-3 days or frozen for later use.

Frequently asked questions

- Why isn’t my dough rising?: Make sure you are using fresh yeast and that the room temperature is adequate. If it’s too cold, the dough won’t rise.
- Can I use dry yeast?: Yes! Use about 8 g of dry yeast instead of 25 g of fresh yeast. Activation is done directly in the flour.
- How do I know when the bread is baked?: The bread is done when it is golden on the outside and sounds hollow when tapped lightly on the bottom.

Delicious combinations

This simple bread is versatile and can be served alongside a variety of dishes. You can enjoy it with a warm soup, a fresh salad, or even with a homemade tomato sauce. Additionally, butter and fruit jam make this bread a perfect breakfast. A warm drink, such as flavored tea or freshly brewed coffee, is the ideal accompaniment to a slice of warm bread.

Nutritional benefits

Homemade bread is a good source of carbohydrates, essential for energy. Whole grain flour, if you choose to use it, adds extra fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Olive oil adds healthy fats, and yeast contributes to digestive health.
