Preparation time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 20 minutes
Total time: 35 minutes
Servings: 25 buns
I present to you a simple and quick recipe for poppy seed buns, a delicious appetizer that will impress everyone. These little wonders are easy to prepare and can be served warm or cold, making them perfect for a party or family meal.
Necessary ingredients:
- 7 g dry yeast
- 300 ml lukewarm milk
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 30 ml oil
- 500 g flour
- 1 egg yolk
- ~50 g poppy seeds
Step 1: Preparing the dough
Start by dissolving the dry yeast in 50 ml of lukewarm milk mixed with the teaspoon of sugar. This step will activate the yeast and help the dough rise. Let the mixture sit for 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Step 2: Mixing the ingredients
In a large bowl, add the flour and make a well in the center. Pour in the dissolved yeast mixture and the remaining lukewarm milk. Add the salt and oil, then gently mix with a spatula or your hands until the ingredients start to combine.
Step 3: Kneading the dough
Transfer the dough to a floured work surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes until the dough becomes elastic and no longer sticks to your hands. I recommend adding flour gradually to avoid making the dough too dry.
Step 4: Doubling in volume
Place the dough in a bowl greased with a little oil and cover it with a clean towel. Let it rise in a warm place until it doubles in size, about 1 hour.
Step 5: Shaping the buns
Once the dough has risen, turn it out onto a lightly floured work surface. Divide it into 25 equal pieces, each weighing about 50 g. Form balls from each piece and flatten them with your palm.
Step 6: Brushing and cutting
Beat the egg yolk with a little milk to obtain a homogeneous mixture. Brush each flattened ball with this mixture, then sprinkle poppy seeds on the greased surface. Using a sharp knife or a card, make a star-shaped cut in the center without cutting through the dough completely. Turn the buns over so the greased side is in the poppy seeds and pull the corners outward, forming a star shape.
Step 7: Baking
Place the buns on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let them rest for another 5-10 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180°C and bake the buns for 15-20 minutes or until golden and fluffy.
Practical tips:
- You can add various spices to the dough, such as granulated garlic or grated cheese, for a different flavor.
- Instead of poppy seeds, you can use sesame seeds or cumin for an interesting variation.
- These buns are also great for a picnic or as a snack between meals.
Serving:
Enjoy the buns warm, alongside a yogurt sauce or hummus for an unforgettable culinary experience. These poppy seed buns are not only delicious but also super easy to prepare, making them perfect for any cooking enthusiast looking to add a special touch to their meals!
