Homemade Pizza with Delicious Toppings
The days when my friends come over are truly special! And when it comes to impressing them, desserts are often the first choice. But today, I decided to make an exception and treat them to a delicious homemade pizza. This recipe is not only easy to prepare, but it can also be customized to everyone's tastes, offering a pleasant and personalized culinary experience.
Preparation time: 1 hour (plus 1 hour for rising)
Baking time: 20-25 minutes
Total time: 2 hours
Servings: 8-10 servings (2 large pizza trays and 3 tart pans)
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 1 kg flour
- 550 ml lukewarm water
- 5 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 20 g fresh yeast
- Oregano (optional but recommended)
For the sauce:
- 1 can tomato paste
- 150 ml water
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- Oregano (to taste)
- Thyme (to taste)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
For the toppings:
- Cooked chicken breast, diced
- Red bell pepper, sliced
- Pressed ham, cubed
- Dried salami, sliced
- Mushrooms, sliced
- Corn (canned)
- Olives, sliced
- 200 g grated cheese
- 200 g mozzarella, sliced
Preparation
1. Activating the yeast: In a small bowl, mix the yeast with the sugar and 50 ml of lukewarm water. Let the mixture sit in a warm place for 20-30 minutes until it becomes frothy. This is a crucial step to achieve a fluffy dough.
2. Preparing the dough: In a large bowl, sift the flour together with the salt. Make a well in the center of the flour and add the yeast mixture. At first, you can mix with a spoon, but I prefer to use my hands to better feel the dough's texture. Gradually add the remaining lukewarm water and, finally, the olive oil and oregano.
3. Kneading: Knead the dough for about 10-15 minutes until it becomes elastic and smooth. If the dough is too sticky, you can add a little more flour. This process helps develop gluten, which will make the pizza fluffier.
4. Rising: Cover the bowl with a clean towel and let the dough rise in a warm place for at least 1 hour, or until it doubles in volume.
5. Preparing the sauce: In a small bowl, mix the tomato paste with the water, sugar, oregano, thyme, salt, and pepper. Adjust the spices to taste. The sauce should have a soft consistency, perfect for spreading on the pizza.
6. Shaping the pizza: Once the dough has risen, divide it into two parts for the pizza. You can use olive oil on your hands to stretch the dough on the trays (or you can use a rolling pin if you prefer). Roll out the dough evenly, leaving a slightly thicker edge.
7. Adding the sauce: Spread the tomato sauce over the pizza base, making sure to cover it evenly.
8. Toppings: Add your favorite toppings! Whether you choose chicken breast, bell peppers, mushrooms, or olives, use a combination that delights your taste buds. Finally, sprinkle the grated cheese and sliced mozzarella on top.
9. Baking: Preheat the oven to 220°C (or 200°C with a fan). Start baking the pizza for 20-25 minutes or until the edges turn golden and crispy. If you want an even crispier crust, you can leave the pizza in the oven for an additional 5 minutes.
Practical Tips
- Ingredients: If you want a healthier version, you can use whole wheat flour or a combination of white and whole wheat flour. This will provide a different texture and a richer flavor.
- Variations: Instead of tomato sauce, you can try a white sauce based on sour cream or cheese for a pizza inspired by Mediterranean cuisines.
- Serving: Serve the pizza hot, alongside a fresh salad or a refreshing white wine. A salad with arugula, cherry tomatoes, and parmesan pairs perfectly!
- Frequently Asked Questions:
- Can I use dry yeast? Yes, you can use 7 g of dry yeast instead of 20 g of fresh yeast.
- How can I store the pizza for the next day? You can keep it in the fridge, covered with plastic wrap. Reheat it in the oven to restore its crispiness.
Nutritional Benefits
Homemade pizza can be a healthier option since you can control the ingredients and quantities. Whole wheat flour adds fiber, and fresh vegetables provide essential vitamins. You can also adjust the amount of cheese or meat to reduce calories.
