Snowballs – A family recipe full of nostalgia and delight
Who doesn’t fondly remember moments spent around the table, savoring desserts that remind us of childhood? "Snowballs" is one of those desserts that not only delights our taste buds but also stirs up cherished memories. This simple and quick recipe has been a staple in my home, especially for my little girl, who loves fluffy and aromatic sweets. Discover how to prepare this delicious dessert that will bring smiles to the faces of your loved ones!
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 30 minutes
Total time: 45 minutes
Number of servings: 20 cubes
Ingredients
For the base:
- 250 g sugar
- 200 ml milk
- 400 g flour
- 4 tablespoons honey
- 70 g margarine or butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
For the glaze:
- 250 g sugar
- 200 g margarine
- 10 tablespoons milk
- 50 g cocoa
- a few drops of rum essence
For decoration:
- grated coconut
Preparation
1. Preparing the base: In a 2-liter pot, add the sugar, milk, margarine (or butter), and honey. Place the pot over medium heat and stir constantly until all ingredients are completely melted and homogeneous. This step is essential for obtaining a fluffy and tasty base, so don’t skip it!
2. Cooling the mixture: After melting the ingredients, remove the pot from the heat and let the mixture cool for a few minutes. It is important not to add the flour and eggs when the mixture is too hot, as this could coagulate the eggs.
3. Adding dry ingredients: Once the mixture has cooled slightly, add the flour, the two eggs, and the baking powder. Use a mixer or a spatula to mix everything well until you achieve a homogeneous composition.
4. Baking the base: Line a deep baking tray with flour or parchment paper. Pour the mixture into the tray and place it in the preheated oven at 160 degrees Celsius (medium heat for a normal oven) for 30 minutes. Check if the base is baked by inserting a toothpick into the center; if it comes out clean, the base is ready!
5. Preparing the glaze: In another pot, add all the ingredients for the glaze: sugar, margarine, milk, and cocoa. Place on heat and stir until the mixture begins to boil. Let it boil for a few minutes, then remove it from the heat.
6. Assembling the dessert: Once the base has cooled sufficiently, cut it into cubes (about 20). Using a fork, take one cube, dip it in the glaze, then roll it in the grated coconut. This fork trick not only helps you keep the cubes intact but also prevents them from sticking to the plate.
7. Serving: Place the snowballs on a platter and let them rest for a few minutes before serving. They are delicious both warm and cold!
Practical tips
- Ingredients: Use unsalted butter for a richer taste, but margarine is also a good option for a fluffy texture. Honey can be replaced with maple syrup for a distinct flavor.
- Variations: You can experiment with different ingredients, adding chopped nuts or hazelnuts to the base mixture, or even making the glaze with white chocolate for a contrast of colors and flavors.
- Frequently asked questions:
- Can I use plant-based milk? Yes, almond or soy milk are excellent options and will provide a different taste.
- How can I store the snowballs? They keep well in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days or in the fridge for a week.
Nutritional benefits
These snowballs are a delicious choice to satisfy your sweet tooth without compromising health too much. The flour provides essential carbohydrates, while the eggs offer protein. Honey is a natural sweetener, rich in antioxidants.
Complementary desserts
This dessert pairs perfectly with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a fresh fruit sauce. A cup of coffee or a fragrant tea will complete the sweet moment.
