Roses (Lenten)
To prepare these delicious rose-shaped pastries, we start by gathering the necessary ingredients: 500 g of flour, 250 g of butter or margarine, 100 g of sugar, 2 eggs, a pinch of salt, and a teaspoon of baking powder. These ingredients are essential for obtaining a tender and fragrant dough, perfect for holding the delicious filling we will use.
In a large bowl, we combine the flour with the baking powder and salt, mixing well to ensure that the dry ingredients are evenly distributed. In another container, we will mix the softened butter (at room temperature) with the sugar until we obtain a fluffy cream. Then, we add the eggs one by one, continuing to mix to incorporate them well into the mixture. Once we have achieved a homogeneous mass, we start gradually adding the flour mixture, mixing with a spatula or with our hands until the dough becomes compact.
Once the dough is formed, we wrap it in plastic wrap and let it chill for about an hour. This step is crucial as it helps to firm up the butter and makes the dough easier to handle. Meanwhile, we can prepare the filling. In my case, I chose a mixed berry jam with ground nuts, but you can experiment with various fillings such as sweet cheese, chocolate, or even savory fillings.
After the dough has chilled, we take it out of the fridge and roll it out on a floured surface until we obtain a thin sheet. We cut squares of about 10 cm by 10 cm. It is important to slightly cut the corners to form the "petals" of the rose. In the center of each square, we place a teaspoon of filling, then we start gathering the corners towards the center, slightly overlapping them to form a rose.
After we have formed all the pastries, we place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper and bake them in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20-25 minutes, until they turn golden. When they are ready, we take them out of the oven and let them cool slightly before dusting them with powdered sugar. These treats are perfect to be served at a festive table or simply to indulge family and friends. Each bite will bring an explosion of flavors, and their inviting appearance will surely bring smiles to the faces of loved ones. So, get ready to impress with these delicious rose-shaped pastries!
