Mucenici, a traditional dessert full of history and flavor, are an excellent choice to celebrate special moments or simply to indulge yourself. These syrup-soaked mucenici, with a soft and fragrant dough, are a delicacy that brings together rich tastes and enticing aromas. In this recipe, I will share with you the necessary steps to prepare perfect mucenici, as well as some tips and tricks that will help you achieve a result worthy of the finest patisseries.

Preparation time: 30 minutes
Baking time: 10 minutes
Total time: 40 minutes
Number of servings: 4 servings

Ingredients needed for the dough
- 150 g flour (choose a good quality flour, ideally with a higher gluten content to achieve an elastic dough)
- 60 ml warm water (not hot, to avoid prematurely activating the yeast in the flour)
- a pinch of salt
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
- 1 teaspoon grated orange zest
- a pinch of cinnamon (for a subtle flavor)
- 1 packet of bourbon vanilla sugar (adds a delicate and floral taste)

Ingredients needed for the syrup
- 3 tablespoons honey (for natural sweetness)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 cinnamon stick (for a deep flavor)
- rum essence (we use quality rum, not the small vial)
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- grated lemon zest (for freshness)
- grated orange zest (for an extra flavor)
- 1/2 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, to thicken the syrup)
- 2 tablespoons cocoa (for an intense taste)
- salt (a pinch, to balance the flavors)
- water (enough to boil the mucenici)

Preparing the dough
1. In a bowl, gather all the dry ingredients: flour, salt, lemon zest, orange zest, cinnamon, and vanilla sugar. Mix them well to combine the flavors.
2. Gradually add the warm water, continuously mixing with a spatula or your hands until you obtain an elastic dough. If the dough sticks to your hands, add a little more flour, but be careful not to overdo it, otherwise the mucenici will be too firm.
3. Flour the work surface and roll out the dough into a sheet about 3-4 mm thick. Use a well-floured rolling pin to prevent sticking.

Forming the mucenici
4. If you do not have a special mucenici cutter, you can use two glasses of different sizes to cut circles from the dough. Make sure the outer circles are larger than the inner ones.
5. Once you have obtained the circles, take each small circle and twist it, forming a figure eight (8). Place the mucenici on a floured surface and let them dry overnight.

Boiling the mucenici
6. The next day, in a pot, bring water to a boil, adding a teaspoon of salt. When the water starts to boil, add the mucenici and the cinnamon stick. Boil them until they become soft.
7. If you notice that the liquid is too thin, at this point you can add the cornstarch dissolved in a little water. This will thicken the syrup, giving it a pleasant texture.
8. A few minutes before turning off the heat, add the honey, sugar, cocoa, lemon zest, orange zest, and vanilla sugar. Mix well for the flavors to combine perfectly.

Finishing and serving
9. Once the mucenici are boiled, turn off the heat and add the ground walnuts and rum essence. These will add an extra flavor and texture. You can adjust the amount of cinnamon according to your preferences.
10. Serve the mucenici hot or cold, as preferred. They can be enjoyed both warm and chilled, being just as delicious in both variations.

Practical tips
- If you want to add a personal touch to the recipe, you can experiment with various flavors in the syrup, such as cardamom or ginger.
- You can replace sugar with natural sweeteners, such as maple syrup or agave, for a healthier option.
- Mucenici pair perfectly with a warm drink, such as mint tea or flavored coffee, for a complete indulgence.
