Polish pretzels
Today I invite you to discover a delicious and aromatic pretzel recipe that combines the essence of citrus with the sweetness of vanilla and honey. These Polish pretzels, known as delicious pretzels, are perfect to be enjoyed alongside a fragrant coffee at breakfast or as a sweet snack throughout the day. The recipe is simple, and with the help of a bread machine, you will enjoy a soft and fluffy dough with minimal effort.
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Baking time: 20-25 minutes
Total time: 55-60 minutes
Number of servings: 6-7 pretzels
Ingredients:
For the dough:
- 500 g flour
- 80 g sugar
- 200 ml lukewarm milk
- 100 g melted butter
- 1 packet (7 g) vanilla sugar
- Zest of half a lemon
- A pinch of salt
- 7 g dry yeast
- 1 egg yolk for brushing the pretzels
For brushing the dough:
- 50 g butter
- 1 tablespoon powdered sugar
For the syrup:
- 100 ml water
- 1 tablespoon honey
Step-by-step instructions:
1. Preparing the ingredients: Ensure all ingredients are at room temperature, except for the milk, which should be lukewarm. This is crucial for activating the yeast and achieving perfect dough. It is important to use high-quality flour, preferably type 000, to ensure a fine and fluffy texture.
2. Adding ingredients to the bread machine: In the bread machine's pan, add the ingredients in the following order: lukewarm milk, melted butter, sugar, vanilla sugar, lemon zest, flour, salt, and dry yeast. It is essential to follow this order for the best results.
3. Kneading and rising: Set the machine to the kneading and rising program. Let the machine do its job for about 1 hour. In the end, you will have a risen, soft, and non-sticky dough, perfect for shaping.
4. Shaping the pretzels: Sprinkle a little flour on the work surface and roll out the dough into a rectangular sheet about 1 cm thick. In a small bowl, mix the melted butter with the powdered sugar and brush half of the dough sheet with this mixture. Cover the buttered part with the other half of the dough, as if closing a book.
5. Cutting the dough: Using a knife, cut strips about 2 cm wide from the dough. Then, each strip will be cut in half lengthwise, leaving one end attached. Now, braid the two strips obtained and shape them into a pretzel. Repeat this process until you have formed all the pretzels.
6. Brushing and baking: Place the pretzels on a baking tray lined with parchment paper. In a bowl, beat the egg yolk with a little milk and brush each pretzel with this mixture. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 20-25 minutes, or until golden and appetizing.
7. Preparing the syrup: In a small saucepan, heat the water and add the honey, stirring until fully dissolved. Once the pretzels are ready, pour the warm syrup over them, ensuring each pretzel is well coated.
8. Cooling and serving: Allow the pretzels to cool on a rack so they do not become too soggy. Enjoy them alongside a good coffee or fragrant tea. These pretzels are wonderful for breakfast, but also as a dessert, bringing a smile to anyone's face.
Useful tips:
- Recipe variations: You can experiment with different flavors. Add a little almond extract or cinnamon to the butter mixture for a unique taste. Also, try adding pieces of dried fruit to the dough for extra texture and flavor.
- Frequently asked questions:
- What type of flour should I use? Type 000 or 550 flour is ideal for achieving fluffy and soft pretzels.
- Can I use fresh yeast? Yes, if you prefer, use about 20 g of fresh yeast, but make sure to activate it beforehand in the lukewarm milk.
- Nutritional benefits: These pretzels provide a good source of carbohydrates, making them ideal for starting your day with energy. Additionally, the butter and honey add healthy fats and natural sweetness, enveloping each bite in culinary pleasure.
Personal note:
To add a personal touch to the recipe, I encourage you to try decorating them with almond flakes or crushed nuts before baking. This will not only provide a crunchy texture but also a special appearance to your pretzels.
