It is a quick, easy-to-make dessert that will fill the house with a fantastic aroma, reminding us of the cherished moments spent with loved ones.
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Baking time: 40-45 minutes
Total time: 1 hour and 15 minutes
Number of servings: 8-10
Ingredients:
For the starter:
- 250 ml water
- 1 packet of dry yeast
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon flour
For the dough:
- 500 g flour
- 250 ml water
- 2 eggs
- 150 ml oil
- a pinch of salt
For the filling:
- 1.5 kg apples (choose sweet and fragrant ones)
- 4 tablespoons sugar (or to taste)
- 2 teaspoons cinnamon (for a more intense flavor)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the starter
In a bowl, combine 250 ml of water, yeast, 2 teaspoons of sugar, and 1 tablespoon of flour. Mix the ingredients well until homogeneous. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 15 minutes. You will know the starter is ready when it becomes frothy and doubles in volume.
Step 2: Prepare the apples
Meanwhile, wash the apples well, peel them, and grate them using a large grater. Place the grated apples in a strainer to drain excess water. This step is essential, as it will prevent the pie from becoming too wet.
Step 3: Prepare the dough
In a mixing bowl, add the 500 g of flour, a pinch of salt, the eggs, and the risen starter. Start kneading the dough either by hand or with a food processor, gradually adding 250 ml of water and 150 ml of oil. Continue kneading until the dough becomes elastic and no longer sticks to your hands. Cover the dough with a clean towel and let it rise for one hour.
Step 4: Assemble the pie
After the dough has risen, divide it into two equal parts. Roll out the first part of the dough on a floured surface until you obtain a thin sheet. Place half of the drained apples on the sheet, sprinkle with 3 tablespoons of sugar and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, to taste. Cut the dough into diagonal strips on either side of the apples, then braid the strips to form a beautiful pattern.
Repeat the process with the second part of the dough to form the second pie.
Step 5: Baking
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with parchment paper or grease it with oil and sprinkle a little flour. Place the pies in the tray and bake for 40-45 minutes or until they become golden and crispy. The aromas will fill the house, and in the end, you will enjoy an apple pie that will impress everyone!
Step 6: Serving
Let the pie cool slightly, then cut it into portions and serve warm, alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of sour cream. These are perfect combinations that will add a touch of indulgence to your dessert.
Useful tips:
- You can experiment with different types of apples to find the perfect combination that you like. Tart apples will provide a pleasant contrast to the sweetness of the sugar.
- If you prefer a more intense flavor, add some chopped nuts to the filling or a teaspoon of vanilla.
- Don't forget to check the pie in the last 10 minutes of baking to ensure it doesn't burn.
