Food with chips
When I crave a quick warm snack that appeals to both kids and adults, I resort to this combination of vegetables, cheese, and chips. I've made it with both boiled chicken and salami. Both work, but cubed salami cooks faster. I never use too much mayonnaise, just enough to bind the layers. Otherwise, the steps are simple and straightforward.
Quick Info
Total time: about 45 minutes
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Baking time: 20-30 minutes
Servings: 4-5
Difficulty: easy
Recipe type: warm snack, suitable for a quick meal or small parties
Ingredients
1 bag of Lays chips (any flavor you prefer)
500 g frozen mixed vegetables
2 cups grated cheese or cheese (approx. 200-250 g)
200 g boiled chicken or cubed salami
3-4 tablespoons mayonnaise (to taste)
Preparation steps
1. Boil the frozen vegetables for a few minutes in water, just until they soften slightly. Drain well and set aside.
2. Grate the cheese. Two cups (about 200-250 g) are enough for the whole dish.
3. Choose a baking dish – a ceramic or glass dish is easiest for baking and serving. Place a first layer of half of the grated cheese.
4. Add the boiled chicken or cubed salami over the cheese layer.
5. Add the drained vegetables on top.
6. Cover the vegetables with the remaining grated cheese.
7. Spread a layer of mayonnaise on top, just enough to cover evenly.
8. Crush the chips by hand or in a bowl, so they are broken up but not fine powder. Sprinkle the crushed chips over the mayonnaise layer.
9. Place the dish in a preheated oven at 180°C for 20-30 minutes. The chips will brown slightly, and the layers will bind together.
10. Remove the dish and let it cool for 5-10 minutes before serving.
Why I make this recipe often
Because it’s quick to make and doesn’t require fancy ingredients. You can use whatever you have in the fridge – leftover boiled chicken, salami, cheese, or cheese. The chips change the texture and provide a crispy crust that everyone enjoys. The recipe is flexible and doesn’t leave leftovers.
Tips and variations
Tips
Don’t boil the vegetables too much, or they will become watery.
The chips should only be added at the end; otherwise, they get too soft while baking.
Use a thin layer of mayonnaise – too much will make everything heavy.
Substitutions
Salami can be replaced with any diced cold cut. It even works with sausage if you have it on hand.
The cheese can be just cheese or a mix of cheese types.
Instead of boiled chicken, you can use turkey breast or leftover roast.
Variations
You can add some chopped pickled peppers for a slightly tangy taste.
For a denser layer, you can also add a beaten raw egg mixed with the grated cheese, but it’s not mandatory.
Serving ideas
It can be served simply, warm, from the dish. If it’s for a party, it’s great cut into small squares, easy to pick up with a spatula.
Alongside, a fresh salad or pickles go well.
Frequently asked questions
1. Can I use another type of chips instead of Lays?
Yes, any kind of crispy chips works. The flavor depends on personal taste.
2. If I don’t have chicken or salami, can I leave it without meat?
Yes, it will turn out a vegetarian version. I recommend adding more cheese for consistency.
3. Do the chips stay crispy after baking?
On the surface, yes, especially if you don’t use too much mayonnaise. If they are too thick or you add too much sauce, they can become soft.
4. Can I prepare it in advance and bake later?
I do not recommend it; chips placed too long before baking become soft and lose the right texture.
5. What vegetables work best?
The classic frozen mix (peas, carrots, corn, green beans) works well. Fresh vegetables should be finely chopped and briefly blanched.

Proteins: 16-20 g
Carbohydrates: 35-40 g

Values vary if you use more cheese or salami instead of chicken.
Storage and reheating
It is best served fresh. If leftovers remain, store in the refrigerator in a covered container, but the chips will soften. It can be reheated in the oven, uncovered, but the crispy texture will not be preserved as at first. It is not recommended to keep it for more than 1 day.
