Fig jam is a quick and simple dessert, perfect for adding a touch of elegance to breakfast or enriching a cheese platter. The delicate aroma of figs, combined with citrus, creates a symphony of flavors that will impress any sweet lover. Here’s how you can prepare it step by step to achieve a perfect result.
Ingredients:
- 1 kg figs (choose not overly ripe figs, as they will retain a pleasant texture)
- 500 g sugar
- 300 ml water
- 1 lemon (sliced thinly)
- 1 cinnamon stick (optional, for extra flavor)
Step 1: Preparing the figs
Start by washing the figs well under a stream of cold water. Use a sharp knife to peel them, being careful not to damage them. The figs should be firm but not overly ripe to avoid a too soft consistency in the jam.
Step 2: Preparing the syrup
In a large pot, combine the water and sugar. Place over medium heat and stir occasionally until the sugar completely dissolves. Continue to boil the mixture for about 10-15 minutes until the syrup begins to thicken. A simple method to check the consistency is to take a drop of syrup and place it on a cold plate; if it hardens, it’s ready.
Step 3: Adding the figs
Once the syrup is ready, add the peeled figs to the pot along with the lemon slices and the cinnamon stick if you choose to use it. Gently stir to coat the figs with the syrup. Let the mixture simmer on low heat for about 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. The figs will absorb the syrup's flavors and caramelize slightly.
Step 4: Bottling
When the jam has reached the desired consistency (you can do a similar test as in step 2), remove the pot from the heat. Use a ladle to pour the hot jam into sterilized jars. Make sure to leave about 1 cm of headspace at the top of the jar. Seal the jars with airtight lids.
Step 5: Cooling and storing
Allow the jars to cool completely at room temperature. Once cooled, you can store them in a dark and cool place. The fig jam will be ready to enjoy after a few days, but the flavors will intensify as it ages.
Serving suggestion:
Fig jam is perfect on a slice of toasted bread, alongside goat cheese or as a filling for pancakes. You can also use it to add a touch of sweetness to desserts like ice cream or tarts.
Possible variations:
For an exotic flavor, try adding some chopped nuts to the jam before bottling it. You can also experiment with other citrus fruits, like oranges or limes, to bring a different note.
