Warm sandwich with ham and melted cheese

If I have only a few minutes and want something filling, I make this warm sandwich with ham and melted cheese. It doesn't require many ingredients and can be made quickly in the morning or when I don't feel like cooking something complicated. The basic ingredients are almost always in the fridge, so it’s easy to make without planning.

Quick info

Total time: 12-15 minutes
Preparation time: 5 minutes
Cooking time: 7-10 minutes
Servings: 2 large sandwiches (or 2 people)
Difficulty: easy
Recipe type: warm sandwich, suitable for breakfast or snack

Ingredients

4 slices of toast bread
4 slices of ham
2 slices of melted cheese
50 g margarine or butter
1 red onion

Preparation method

1. Peel the onion and slice it thinly. It’s easiest to do this with a sharp knife so it doesn’t get squished.
2. Spread the margarine (or butter, if I have it) on one side of each slice of toast bread. It’s easier to do this with the bread at room temperature.
3. Place a slice of ham on one slice of bread, with the buttered side facing out, then half a slice of melted cheese. On top, add a few onion rings. Cover with the other slice of bread, also with the buttered side facing out. Repeat for the second sandwich.
4. Heat the grill (or a pan, if I don’t have a grill). When it’s hot, place the sandwiches with the buttered side on the hot surface.
5. Let the sandwiches fry for 3-4 minutes on each side until the bread is lightly browned and the cheese starts to melt. Flip them with a spatula.
6. Remove the sandwiches to a plate and serve them warm. I usually sprinkle fried onion on top or the remaining fresh onion, according to preference.

Why I make this recipe often

It’s quick and doesn’t require complicated ingredients. I love the crunchy texture and the combination of salty ham with melted cheese. It works well at any time and I don’t have to spend much time by the stove. It always turns out hearty and filling.

Tips and variations

Tips

If the bread isn’t very fresh, the sandwich turns out even crunchier. I don’t put too much onion so it doesn’t overpower the flavor of the ham.
When spreading margarine, don’t press too hard, otherwise the bread will tear.
It can also be cooked in a sandwich maker if you don’t have a grill.
It’s important that the pan is already hot so the sandwich doesn’t turn out dry.

Substitutions

The ham can be replaced with other sliced deli meats if you don’t have the exact type.
The melted cheese can be swapped with any other sliced melted cheese.
Margarine can be replaced with butter if you prefer a richer taste.

Variations

You can add a few thin slices of tomato or cucumber if you want more freshness.
The red onion can be left raw or sautéed briefly before adding it to the sandwich for a sweeter taste.
If you want heartier sandwiches, use two slices of melted cheese per sandwich.

Serving ideas

The sandwich is best while warm, with fried onion on top.
It also goes well with pickles or a simple salad on the side.
For a quick breakfast, I cut it in half and take it to go.

Frequently asked questions

1. What type of bread works best for this sandwich?
The most convenient is sliced toast bread. It also works with homemade white bread or baguette, but the slice shouldn’t be too thick.

2. Can I use regular cheese instead of melted cheese?
Regular cheese can be used, but it doesn’t melt as well. With melted cheese, you get that sticky texture specific to warm sandwiches.

3. What if I don’t have a grill?
The sandwich can also be made in a regular pan, ideally non-stick. It’s important to have it well heated before adding the sandwich.

4. Can the sandwich be made without onion?
Yes, it’s optional. I use red onion for flavor and freshness, but it can be omitted if you don’t like the taste or want a strong smell.

5. Can I prepare it in advance and take it to go?
Yes, but the warm sandwich loses its crunch when it cools down. It’s better fresh, but it can also be packed if wrapped in paper.

Nutritional values

Approximate values for one sandwich (1/2 of the recipe):
Calories: 350-400 kcal
Proteins: 13-15 g
Fats: 20-22 g
Carbohydrates: 32-35 g
Sodium and salt can vary greatly depending on the deli meats and melted cheese. These are rough estimates, not exact values.

Storage and reheating

The sandwich is meant to be consumed warm, immediately after preparation. However, if there are leftovers, I can keep it in the fridge for a few hours and reheat it quickly in a pan or grill. It loses its crunch and doesn’t have the same texture, but the taste remains good. I do not recommend keeping it for more than a day.
