Delicious meatballs: the perfect appetizer for any occasion

Who doesn't love fluffy, golden-brown, and aromatic meatballs? These delights are a classic appetizer that everyone knows and appreciates. Whether served with creamy mashed potatoes or as part of an appetizer platter, meatballs are always welcome. In this recipe, I will share my favorite way to prepare meatballs, inspired by traditional recipes but with a few tricks to make them truly special.

Preparation time: 30 minutes
Cooking/frying time: 15-20 minutes
Total time: 50 minutes
Number of servings: 4-6

Ingredients:

- 700-800 g meat (your choice: pork, a mix, or chicken breast; avoid store-bought minced meat as it won't have the same texture)
- 4-5 cloves of garlic
- 1 bun
- 1 carrot
- 1 onion
- 1 potato
- A handful of fresh parsley
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 egg
- 100 g bacon or any other preferred smoked meat
- White flour, for coating
- 2 eggs (to dip the meatballs)
- A pinch of salt (for the beaten eggs)
- A bit of garlic powder (optional)
- Oil, for frying

Step by step:

1. Preparing the meat: Start by washing the meat well, then cut it into small cubes. Use a food processor or meat grinder to achieve a uniform texture. These details are essential for getting the perfect meatballs. Avoid store-bought minced meat as it may contain additives that affect flavor and texture.

2. Preparing the vegetables: Peel and finely chop the onion, carrot, and potato. The traditional recipe suggests grating the carrot and potato for better integration into the mixture. Chop the garlic finely or grate it.

3. The bun: Soak the bun in water or milk for a few minutes, then squeeze it well. This will add moisture and make the meatballs fluffier.

4. The meatball mixture: In a large bowl, combine the minced meat, vegetables, chopped garlic, chopped parsley, beaten egg, squeezed bun, and diced bacon. Season with salt and pepper and mix well with your hands until you have a homogeneous mixture. It is important not to overmix, as the meatballs can become tough.

5. Resting the mixture: Let the mixture rest for 30 minutes. This will help the flavors blend and make the meatballs tastier.

6. Preparing for frying: In a small bowl, beat the two eggs together with a pinch of salt and, if desired, a bit of garlic powder. This mixture will help the meatballs have a crispy crust.

7. Shaping the meatballs: With wet hands, take a portion of the meatball mixture (about the size of a walnut), shape it into a round form, and then flatten it slightly. Roll each meatball in flour, making sure it is well coated.

8. Frying the meatballs: Heat a generous amount of oil in a frying pan over high heat. When the oil is hot, dip each meatball in the beaten egg and carefully place it in the pan. Fry the meatballs for 5-6 minutes on each side until they are golden and crispy. It is important not to overcrowd the pan for even frying.

9. Finishing: Once the meatballs are fried, cover the pan with a lid and reduce the heat to low to let them cook evenly for another 2 minutes. This step will make the meatballs more tender and juicy.

Serving and pairing suggestions

Meatballs are delicious served warm, alongside creamy mashed potatoes, coleslaw, or with a yogurt sauce. You can also pair them with grilled vegetables or fried potatoes. Another idea is to serve them in a sandwich with fresh bread and various sauces.

Useful tips:

- Variations of ingredients: You can experiment with different types of meat or vegetables, adding grated zucchini or bell peppers. For a more intense flavor, try adding herbs like thyme or oregano.
- Oven-baked meatballs: If you prefer a healthier option, meatballs can be baked in the oven. Preheat the oven to 200°C, place the meatballs on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for 20-25 minutes, turning them halfway through.
- Smoky flavor: Using bacon adds a special taste. Experiment with other types of smoked meat, such as bacon or smoked sausages, to give the recipe a twist.

Nutritional benefits

Meatballs are an excellent source of protein, especially when made with lean meat. The added vegetables contribute to fiber, vitamins, and minerals, making these meatballs a nutritious choice for an appetizer or main meal.
