Mozzarella in Carrozza: An Italian Delicacy

Today, I invite you to discover one of the most beloved Italian snacks, Mozzarella in Carrozza. Although the name sounds more like a railroad adventure, the truth is that this dish is a true culinary feast. It is a simple and quick recipe, perfect for breakfast or a savory snack that will bring a smile to anyone who loves mozzarella.

A Brief History

Mozzarella in Carrozza was created to provide a delicious use for leftover bread, invigorating it through a delightful frying process that completely transforms it. This recipe is part of the culinary tradition of not wasting anything, a common practice in many cultures. In Italy, where mozzarella is a staple ingredient, this recipe quickly became popular among those looking to experience a combination of textures and flavors.

Necessary Ingredients (for 4 servings)

- 2 large eggs
- 100 ml milk
- 250 g mozzarella (about 2 balls)
- 12 slices of bread (preferably baguette or white bread)
- Flour (for coating the bread)
- Salt and pepper (to taste)
- Oil for frying (preferably olive oil or sunflower oil)

Preparation Time

- Preparation time: 15 minutes
- Frying time: 10 minutes
- Total time: 25 minutes

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Preparing the Ingredients: Start by slicing the mozzarella into thin slices. It is important that they are thin so that they melt evenly during frying. Also, slice the bread into pieces about 1-1.5 cm thick. If you are using older bread, it will be perfect for this recipe.

2. Preparing the Egg Mixture: In a bowl, beat the two eggs well. Add the milk, a pinch of salt, and pepper to taste. Mix until you achieve a homogeneous composition.

3. Assembling the Sandwiches: Take a slice of bread and place a slice of mozzarella on top. Make sure the mozzarella does not exceed the edge of the bread slice, otherwise it will burn during frying. Cover with another slice of bread, forming a sandwich. Continue this process until you have made all the sandwiches.

4. Dipping in Flour and Egg: Place the flour in a bowl and dip each sandwich in the flour, covering all sides. Then, soak the sandwiches in the egg mixture, ensuring that all sides are well covered.

5. Frying: In a pan, heat the oil over medium heat. When the oil is hot enough, add the sandwiches. Fry them for 3-4 minutes on each side or until they become golden and crispy. I recommend turning them carefully so as not to ruin their shape.

6. Serving: Once the sandwiches are fried, remove them onto a paper towel to absorb excess oil. Serve them hot, perhaps with a slice of prosciutto, for added flavor. Mozzarella in Carrozza is delicious and simple, but you can experiment with tomato sauces or a yogurt sauce with herbs.

Practical Tips

- Types of Bread: If you don’t have white bread, you can also use whole grain bread or even ciabatta. Each type of bread will provide a different texture.
- Mozzarella: Use fresh mozzarella for a more intense flavor. If you want to experiment, you can try goat cheese or cheddar cheese.
- Spices: Add dried herbs (basil, oregano) to the egg mixture for an extra flavor boost.
- Vegetarian Option: You can add thin slices of tomatoes or olives between the layers of mozzarella for a more colorful and healthier version.

Nutritional Benefits

Mozzarella is a good source of protein and calcium, making it a healthy choice for a nutritious breakfast. Additionally, eggs are rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Unfortunately, due to frying, this dish can be higher in calories, but in moderation, it is a delicious choice.

So, you cut the bread into slices... or a baguette... whatever you have... the recipe called for sliced bread specifically for antipasto used by Italians... honestly, I make the recipe like this when the bread hardens and is no longer so fresh... but it's not something to throw away... at least in my case, not much gets wasted... the eggs are beaten well, milk, salt, and pepper are added. The mozzarella is sliced thinner, so it melts during frying. You take a slice of bread, place mozzarella slices on top, but make sure they don't go over the edge, as they will burn while frying... then cover it with another slice of bread, like a sandwich... it is well coated in flour on all sides, including the sides, then dipped in egg, again, on all sides very well. It is fried in hot oil but at a moderate heat, so it doesn't burn and the bread cooks well. During frying, I kept flipping it from one side to the other. It is served warm... after cooling, the mozzarella hardens... I also added a slice of prosciutto to it... well, for this small thing.

Ingredients: 2 eggs, 100 ml milk, approximately 250 g mozzarella, 12 slices of bread - this is what I used... flour for dusting the bread, salt, pepper, oil for frying
