Potato and meat moussaka is a classic, hearty, and incredibly flavorful dish, perfect for a family dinner or a meal with friends. This simple recipe will guide you step by step in creating a main course that will delight your taste buds. Let's get started!
Necessary ingredients:
- 1 kg of potatoes
- 600 g of minced meat (a mix of beef and pork)
- 3 eggs
- 150 ml of tomato juice (you can also use fresh crushed tomatoes)
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- 150 g of grated cheese (for a delicious crust)
- 1 cube of butter (for added flavor)
- 2 cloves of garlic (crushed, for aroma)
Step-by-step preparation:
1. Preparing the potatoes: Start by peeling the potatoes. Slice them into thin rounds, about 0.5 cm thick, to cook evenly. Place the potatoes in a pot with cold water and add salt. Boil them for a few minutes, just until they start to soften, but not completely. This technique helps preserve the texture of the potatoes during baking.
2. Preparing the meat filling: In a large bowl, add the minced meat, beaten egg, crushed garlic, salt, and pepper. Mix the ingredients well with a spatula or your hands until the mixture becomes homogeneous. Tip: If you want to add more flavor, you can include herbs like oregano or basil.
3. Assembling the moussaka: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Take a baking dish and grease it with the butter cube to prevent sticking. Arrange a uniform layer of potato rounds on the bottom of the dish. Then add a layer of the minced meat mixture, and on top, place another layer of potatoes. Continue alternating layers until the ingredients are used up, making sure to finish with a layer of potatoes.
4. Adding the tomato juice: In a small bowl, combine the tomato juice with a glass of water and pour this mixture over the layers of potatoes. Make sure the liquid lightly covers the potatoes on top, so they cook evenly and do not dry out.
5. Baking: Place the dish in the preheated oven and let it bake for 30 minutes. This time will allow the potatoes to soften and the flavors to develop.
6. Finishing the dish: After 30 minutes, take the dish out of the oven and prepare a mixture of the remaining 2 eggs and the grated cheese. Pour this mixture evenly over the moussaka and return the dish to the oven for another 10-15 minutes, or until a nicely browned crust forms on top.
7. Serving: Let the moussaka rest for 10 minutes before cutting it. This will help stabilize the layers. Serve it warm, alongside a fresh salad or a portion of Greek yogurt for a wonderful contrast of flavors.
Variation suggestion: You can replace some of the potatoes with zucchini or eggplant to add a different note to the dish. You can also experiment with various types of cheese to achieve a unique crust.
This potato and meat moussaka is not only a delicious dish but also a recipe that brings a touch of warmth and comfort to every meal. Enjoy every serving!
