Perfect for snowy evenings, this mulled wine is more than just a drink - it’s a story that unfolds with every sip.
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 15 minutes
Total: 25 minutes
Servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 750 ml red wine (opt for a fruity bouquet wine, like Côtes du Rhône or a white wine if you prefer)
- 1 mandarin cut into pieces
- 1/2 apple sliced
- 1 star anise
- 1 teaspoon mixed allspice, coriander, and cumin
- 1 teaspoon whole pepper
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1-2 tablespoons sugar (optional, depending on your preference)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the ingredients: Start by washing the fruits well. Cut the mandarin into pieces and the apple into thin slices. Make sure you have all the spices handy, as the preparation process needs to be quick and efficient.
2. Heat the wine: Pour the red wine into a deeper pot that can withstand high temperatures. Choose a pot that allows for even heat distribution to avoid burning the wine.
3. Add the spices: Put the star anise, cinnamon sticks, spice mix, and whole pepper into the wine. These ingredients will turn your mulled wine into a true aromatic delicacy.
4. Sweetening (optional): If you prefer a sweeter mulled wine, add 1-2 tablespoons of sugar. Stir well to dissolve the sugar in the warm wine.
5. Boiling: Place the pot over medium heat and bring the wine to a boil, stirring occasionally. When the wine starts to bubble, add the sliced fruits. They will not only add a wonderful flavor but also enrich the drink with a hint of freshness.
6. Infusing: After the wine has boiled, reduce the temperature to low and cover the pot with a lid. Let it infuse for 10-15 minutes. This step is essential for the flavors to blend perfectly.
7. Serving: Once the wine has infused sufficiently, it’s ready to serve. Use a strainer to remove the spices and fruits (if desired) and pour the wine into heat-resistant mugs or special mulled wine glasses.
Serving suggestion: Enjoy the mulled wine alongside a winter salad with potatoes, smoked fish, red onion, and olives - it will create a delicious contrast and turn the evening into a memorable culinary experience.
Possible variations: You can also add other fruits, such as oranges or pears, or experiment with different types of wine. Substitute sugar with honey or maple syrup for a different note of sweetness.
This mulled wine with star anise and cinnamon will surely become one of your favorite winter recipes. Savor it in the company of loved ones and let the warm aromas transport you to a place that feels like home!
