When I don't feel like cooking something complicated, the omelette roll with ham, tomatoes, and Philadelphia remains one of the options I turn to quite often. It's quick to make, the ingredients are simple, and with a little attention, the result always looks good on the plate. It's a practical option for breakfast or a quick lunch, especially if I already have eggs and tomatoes in the fridge.

Quick Info

Total time: about 15-20 minutes
Preparation time: 5-7 minutes
Cooking time: 8-10 minutes
Servings: 2
Difficulty: easy
Recipe type: breakfast, quick snack, light lunch

Ingredients

4 eggs
4 slices of salami or ham
2 tablespoons of olive oil
10 cherry tomatoes
200 g Philadelphia cheese
salt and pepper
green parsley (for garnish)

Preparation method

1. Crack the eggs two at a time into a bowl, add salt and pepper, and beat well with a fork.
2. Put a tablespoon of oil in a non-stick skillet and let it heat up well over medium heat.
3. Pour the first two beaten eggs into the skillet, gently moving them to achieve a thin omelette, like a pancake. When cooked and pulling away from the edges, remove the omelette onto a plate.
4. Repeat with the next two eggs and the remaining oil to get a second thin omelette. Let them cool slightly while you cut the tomatoes.
5. Wash and cut the cherry tomatoes into quarters.
6. Spread each cooled omelette with an even layer of Philadelphia cheese using a knife or spatula.
7. Place two slices of ham or salami on each omelette over the cheese.
8. Sprinkle half of the cut cherry tomatoes on top of each omelette.
9. Roll each omelette tightly without pressing too hard, then cut each roll in half with a sharp knife.
10. Finally, place the rolls on a plate and sprinkle a little chopped green parsley on top.

Why I make the recipe often

What I appreciate most is the speed with which it is made and the fact that I can easily change the ingredients if I have other leftovers in the fridge. It's substantial enough and works at any time. It doesn't require many dishes, and there's not much to clean up. Plus, if there's any left, I can eat it cold later.

Tips and variations

Tips

- If the skillet is not hot enough, the omelette will turn out thick and won't roll well.
- To make the roll easier to cut, let the omelette cool for 2-3 minutes before adding the cheese and filling.
- If the Philadelphia cheese is too cold, it spreads harder; let it sit for a few minutes at room temperature before spreading on the omelette.

Substitutions

- Instead of salami or ham, you can use sliced chicken breast or even prosciutto, if you have it.
- Cherry tomatoes can be replaced with sliced bell peppers or cucumbers.
- Instead of Philadelphia, you can try any plain cream cheese.

Variations

- You can add spinach leaves or a few slices of green onion if you want a fresher version.
- If you want a more festive roll, you can add a little grated cheese over the cream cheese before adding the ham.
- For a spicy version, add a few chili flakes over the cheese.

Serving ideas

- It goes well with a simple salad on the side, especially for lunch.
- If you cut the roll into smaller slices, it can also be served on platters for a buffet or brunch.
- It's good cold, taken as a packed meal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make the omelette all at once with all the eggs?

You can, but it will turn out too thick to roll. It's easier to work with if you make two thin omelettes.

What can I use to spread on the omelette if I don't have Philadelphia?

Any plain cream cheese works. You can also try ricotta if you prefer a lighter texture.

If I don't have cherry tomatoes, what else can I put?

Any vegetable that doesn't release much water: red bell pepper, cucumber, or even thin slices of olives.

Can the roll be prepared a day in advance?

I recommend making it and eating it the same day, but it can be stored in the fridge for a few hours. It doesn't retain its texture as well after a day.

Do I have to use ham or salami?

No, you can skip them for a vegetarian version or use leftovers of roasted meat.

Nutritional values

Approximately, for one serving (half the recipe):
Calories: 400-430 kcal
Protein: 22-24 g
Fat: 30-33 g
Carbohydrates: 5-7 g

Values may vary depending on the type of ham, cheese, and how much oil is absorbed during frying.

Storage and reheating

The omelette roll can be stored in the fridge, covered, for up to 24 hours. I do not recommend reheating in the microwave, as the omelette becomes rubbery. It's good cold, but do not keep it for more than a day – the cheese and tomatoes change texture.
