Nan bread
Naan bread - an Indian delicacy, soft and fluffy, perfect for accompanying curries or enjoyed plain with a drizzle of melted butter. This simple and quick recipe will transform you into exceptional cooks, bringing an authentic flavor from the East to your table.
Preparation time: 15 minutes
Fermentation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Total time: 40 minutes
Number of servings: 4-6
### Ingredients:
- 500 g all-purpose flour (ideally use type 00 flour for a finer texture)
- 1 packet (7 g) dry yeast
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 200 ml warm milk (make sure it is not hot to avoid killing the yeast)
- 100 ml warm water
- 3 tablespoons natural yogurt (to add a hint of acidity and improve texture)
- 3 tablespoons oil (or melted butter for a richer taste)
- Oil or butter for greasing
### Instructions:
1. Activating the yeast: In a small bowl, combine the dry yeast with the 2 tablespoons of sugar and 50 ml of warm milk. Gently mix and let it sit for 15 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy. This is an essential step to activate the yeast and ensure fluffy naan bread.
2. Preparing the dough: In a large mixing bowl, add the all-purpose flour and salt. Make a well in the center of the flour and pour in the activated yeast mixture, the remaining warm milk, warm water, yogurt, and oil.
3. Kneading: Using a spatula or your hands, mix the ingredients until a dough forms. Then, knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes on a lightly floured surface until it becomes smooth and elastic. If the dough is too sticky, add a little flour, but be careful not to overdo it.
4. Fermentation: Shape the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp towel and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
5. Shaping the naans: Once the dough has risen, divide it into 4-6 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and let them rest for 10 minutes. This step will make the dough easier to roll out.
6. Rolling out the dough: Using a rolling pin, roll each ball into a thin disc, about 3-5 mm thick. You can sprinkle a little flour on the work surface to prevent sticking.
7. Cooking the naans: Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat. When it's hot, add one naan and cook for about 2 minutes until bubbles appear and it turns golden on the bottom. Flip it over and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Repeat for each naan.
8. Serving: After each naan is cooked, brush it with melted butter and sprinkle a little salt or herbs if desired. Naan bread is delicious warm, served alongside curries or grilled vegetables.
### Helpful tips:
- Variations: You can customize the recipe by adding fresh herbs like coriander or chopped garlic to the dough. Also, for a stuffed naan, add cheese or mashed potatoes in the center of the dough before sealing and rolling it out.
- Storage: If you have leftover naans, you can keep them in an airtight bag at room temperature for 2 days or freeze them for later use. Reheat them in a skillet or microwave to bring them back to life.
With this naan bread recipe, you will bring a touch of authenticity to your kitchen. Enjoy every bite and turn ordinary meals into special moments!
