Witch Fingers: Spooky Cookies for Halloween

Halloween is a holiday full of magic, mystery, and of course, many culinary delights. This year, I decided to let my imagination run wild and prepare some cookies with my daughter that would bring us smiles and, why not, a few shivers. We present to you the "Witch Fingers" recipe, a quick and simple dessert that will add a touch of magic and fun to your Halloween table.

Preparation Time

- Preparation time: 30 minutes
- Baking time: 20 minutes
- Total time: 50 minutes
- Number of servings: 20 cookies

Ingredients

To make about 20 witch fingers, you will need the following ingredients:

- 100 g powdered sugar
- 100 g butter (at room temperature)
- 1 egg
- 280 g flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- A pinch of salt
- Vanilla (powder or essence)
- A pack of almonds (about 20-24 pieces)
- Jam (preferably apricot or raspberry)

The History of Halloween Cookies

In a world full of horror stories and fantastic characters, cookies have become a Halloween tradition. These cookies, with their unique shape, remind us of tales of witches and fantastic creatures. Whether enjoyed at a Halloween party or just with family, "witch fingers" have become a symbol of this colorful and creative holiday.

Preparation Techniques

1. Preparing the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the powdered sugar with the soft butter. Use an electric mixer or spatula to achieve a creamy mixture. Add the egg and vanilla, continuing to mix until the ingredients are well integrated.

2. Adding Dry Ingredients: In another bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the butter and sugar composition, mixing until you obtain a fine and elastic dough.

3. Shaping the Cookies: Sprinkle a little flour on the work surface. Divide the dough into about 20 balls (about 25 g each). Shape each ball into a finger, making a slight curve in the middle to mimic the natural shape of fingers.

4. Adding Almond "Nails": At the tip of each finger, insert an almond, which will represent the nail. This detail not only adds a spooky appearance but also provides a crunchy texture to the cookies.

5. Baking the Cookies: Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the shaped cookies on it. Preheat the oven to 180 °C and bake the cookies for 20 minutes, or until they are lightly golden. Attention: if the cookies start to darken, reduce the oven temperature.

6. Finishing the Cookies: Once the cookies have cooled, you will notice that the almonds may easily fall off. To fix them, dip each almond in jam and then reattach it to the cookie. This will add a sweet touch and make the "fingers" look even spookier.

Serving and Variations

The cookies can be served on a Halloween-themed platter, alongside other treats like pumpkin cakes, themed cupcakes, or drinks such as hot spiced apple cider. You can also experiment with different types of jam (e.g., orange or cherry) to change the flavor.

Nutritional Benefits

These cookies not only look good, but they also contain ingredients that can provide nutritional benefits. Butter offers healthy fats, and almonds are an excellent source of protein and fiber. However, it’s important to consume them in moderation, considering they are sweet and calorie-rich.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I replace butter with margarine?
Of course! Margarine works well, but the taste will be slightly different.

What else can I use instead of almonds?
You can use cashews or hazelnuts, but make sure they are cut to the right size.

How can I store the cookies?
The cookies are best stored in an airtight container at room temperature for a few days.

Is this a vegan recipe?
This recipe is not vegan due to the egg and butter, but you can experiment with flax eggs and vegan margarine for a vegan version.

Final Notes

Witch fingers are not just a dessert, but also a wonderful way to spend time with loved ones around Halloween. Whether you make them with kids or friends, these treats will bring smiles and laughter, turning the evening into a true culinary adventure. So, dress up in your Halloween costumes, gather the ingredients, and let’s have fun cooking together!

Mix all the ingredients except for the almonds and jam until you get a fine and elastic dough. Divide this dough into about 20 small balls (about 25 grams each), then start shaping the cookies as shown in the pictures below. After shaping them, place an almond on top like a nail, arrange them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper, and bake in the oven at 180 degrees for about 20 minutes. They should be lighter in color when done... if you notice they are darkening while baking, reduce the heat! Once they are ready, you will see that the almond tends to fall off... I took them out, dipped them in jam, and then placed them back on. This will make them stick to your fingers and give them a scarier appearance.

Ingredients: for about 20 fingers we need: 100g powdered sugar, 100g butter, 1 egg, 280g flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, a pinch of salt, vanilla (powder), a packet of almonds, jam
